Ophthalmic plastic surgery is an ever-expanding subspecialty of opthalmology that deals with disorders of the eyelids, orbits (bones around the eyes), and lacrimal (tear) system. Dr. Mallon is currently the area's only fellowship-trained opthalmic plastic surgeon.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Blepharoplasty is surgery to improve the appearance and function of the eyelids. The goal of blepharoplasty is to give the eyes a more youthful look by removing excess skin, muscle and bulging fat from the upper and/or lower eyelids. Large amounts of excess upper eyelid skin may actually constrict peripheral vision, making this surgery not only
cosmetically beneficial, but functionally necessary.
BOTOX®
Dr. Mallon has over ten years of experience injecting BOTOX® for functional and cosmetic purposes. BOTOX® is highly effective in the treatment of blepharospasms and hemifacial spasms. Cosmetic uses include a temporary reduction of brow furrows and crow’s feet. Dr. Mallon’s gentle touch combined with his experience and knowledge of the anatomy of the brow and face lead to high patient satisfaction.
Ptosis
Ptosis is the medical term for drooping of the upper eyelid. This condition can affect one or both upper eyelids, and can occur as a result of aging, injury, muscular or neurological conditions or may be congenital. Correction of ptosis may be done at the same time as blepharoplasty and is accomplished by repositioning the levator muscle tendon. This surgery is recommended when the eyelid drooping obstructs peripheral vision or becomes cosmetically unacceptable.
Tear Duct Abnormalities
A blocked tear duct (nasolacrimal duct obstruction) is a condition that most commonly results in chronic tearing (epiphora). It can also result in recurrent eye infections and occasionally, an abscess or a very serious infection of the tissues around the eye may occur. This condition can be diagnosed in the office with special testing and may be treated with a surgical procedure (Dacryocystorhinostomy).
Entropion / Ectropion Surgery
An Entropion is an inwardly turned eyelid. Rubbing against the eye leads to redness, irritation, tearing and blurred vision. If uncorrected, serious eye problems can occur, including infection and corneal abrasions, and scarring. This condition can be diagnosed with a routine eye exam and corrected with surgery.
An Ectropion is an outwardly turned or sagging lower eyelid. This malpositioned eyelid leads to an exposed, dry eye and often results in tearing and eye irritation. If uncorrected this can lead to eye infections and serious corneal complications. This condition can be diagnosed with a routine eye exam and corrected with surgery.
Skin Cancer Removal & Reconstruction (Frozen Sections)
Skin cancers on the eyelids and the surrounding tissues are very common and are best treated with surgical removal. Dr. Mallon works closely with a pathologist during skin cancer surgery to ensure complete removal of the tumor, using a technique called Frozen Sections. This technique is highly successful in providing a cure. Once the tumor is removed Dr. Mallon uses his expertise to reconstruct the defects in a manner that preserves the function and cosmetic appearance.
