J. Michael Schnell, M.D., received his medical degree from the University of
Maryland in Baltimore, during which time he was awarded a fellowship in
radiation therapy. For his post-graduate work, Dr. Schnell completed an
internship and, subsequently, a residency in ophthalmology, both at the
University of Maryland Hospital. He went on to become Chief Resident before
opening his private practice in St. Albans, Vermont.
Dr. Schnell is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners and the
American Board of Ophthalmology. He was affiliated with Northwestern Medical
Center. At that hospital, he served as chairman of the department of surgery, president of the medical staff, and president of the board of directors. Dr.
Schnell has worked with the Vermont State Medical Society, moving up to
occupy the position of president, and he was the founding member and
president of the Vermont Rural Health Consortium. He also has acted as
chairman on the executive committee of the Vermont Health Care Review and a
member of the Board of Directors for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Vermont.
Dr. Schnell’s community activities include acting as Board and Campaign
Chairman for the United Way, participating on the Board of Directors for
both the Bellows Free Academy and the Collins-Perley Athletic Center, as
well as being a member of the Northwestern Medical Center Golf Committee.
